Interdisciplinary Degree Programs

A liberal education provided by an interdisciplinary degree program provides the skills most in demand by employers in today’s ever-changing world:

  • critical and creative thinking
  • effective communication
  • the ability to connect different kinds of knowledge and place local issues into a global context
Appalachian offers five interdisciplinary degree programs, all housed in University College. In each one, students learn to integrate multiple disciplines and perspectives. This helps them develop a broader view of the world and become well prepared for a variety of careers, as well as for graduate school and professional programs such as law school and business school.

What graduates are saying:

My interdisciplinary studies degree offered a tailored-made self design. Many programs in graduate schools, businesses, entrepreneurial avenues and venture capital firms open doors for forward thinking, self-disciplined individuals.”

– George Jeffrey ’96, entrepreneur, musician and artist

“An interdisciplinary degree is for anyone who genuinely believes in something bigger, something better than the established concepts of what is or has to be, and who is willing and excited to explore a different way.”

– Adrienne Wagner ’07 performance artist, and caregiver for a child with autism
