The purpose of this course will be to examine the eight types of wellness: emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual, and how these different types of wellness can lend themselves to stress management. This course will utilize research in the social sciences to help students determine proven wellness and stress reduction strategies. In addition to studying the impact of stressful events from trauma to a new baby to incarceration, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of the scholarship to improve upon their own wellness. In exploring library resources, students will learn to determine what makes research credible while learning more about wellness and stress. Students will practice creative thinking skills through a semester-long project that will highlight the importance of self-care strategies. Other projects will link wellness to working locally to create global change, and offer opportunities to explore the resources on Appalachian State's campus. Our in-class activities will focus on methods to prevent stress and foster wellness, such as through expressive arts.
