Beth has worked at Appalachian State University in various roles since 2001. She has been the Director of the ACCESS Scholarship Program since 2008. In the early stages of ACCESS, Beth developed and implemented a fully-integrated program of academic and personal support in addition to the existing financial support. Currently, she advises ACCESS scholars from orientation through graduation, advocates for the financial and academic needs of ACCESS students, teaches a college success course called ACCESS Seminar, and collaborates with various offices across campus to make the financial, academic, and personal support possible.
Previously at Appalachian, Beth served as the Assistant Director of Freshman Seminar and Summer Preview, a nationally-recognized first-year experience program. In this role, Beth learned what first-year students need to be successful, both academically and personally. She relies on this experience in many ways as the director of ACCESS.
A native of Danville, VA, Beth attended the College of William & Mary where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. After teaching high school for four years, she moved to Boone and is a two-time graduate of Appalachian earning a Master’s degree in College Student Development and an Education Specialist degree in Higher Education. She is passionate about equality in education, both at the college-level and in K-12 education. She is the former president and vice president of the PTO at her children’s school and remains an active participant helping to raise funds to provide a quality education to all students. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband Clinton and their two boys, Jax and Sam.
