Becoming You

Life transitions such as attending a University can be filled with excitement and fear all at the same time. For many students it can seem overwhelming being far away from home as well as being exposed to new people and new ideas that challenge who we are and where we come from. This course will explore how we develop and sustain our sense of identity within a dynamic culture of the 21st century. Through intellectual exploration, critical discussion, self-reflection and creative problem solving with peers and mentors, students will explore the concept of their own identity as it is related to gender and sexuality, friendship and family, race, ethnicity and society, through the lens of various disciplines including history, philosophy, literature, sociology, psychology, anthropology, art, governments and neuroscience. This seminar will venture into academic terrain that will be both familiar and unfamiliar. Curiosity, creativity, a spirit of open-minded inquiry, growth mindset as well as a measure of humility are a prerequisite for this course that will be an odyssey of self-discovery.

NOTE: This course is offered as a hybrid with 50% in person as stated and 50% asynchronous (no required meeting time).
