Grandfather Mountain is perhaps the most recognizable peak in Northwest North Carolina. The summit ridgeline has become a symbol for our region and it is visible from all directions. But there is much more to the mountain than the familiar profile. Students in this course will explore Grandfather’s geological and cultural significance. We will investigate the mountain’s history as well as it’s struggles in being protected. We will also focus on Grandfather’s current state in terms of land management and access, and learn how that access is planned, developed, managed, and maintained. In addition, we will interact with some of the professionals that advocate for the mountain as part of their career.
