Listen Up! Exploring Visionary Music through the Ages
This First Year Seminar class is intended for university students with an interest in music, from antiquity to today. Student will examine "Visionary" music throughout the ages and search for the musical, societal, and educational parallels and conclusions can be drawn from the past to today. Visionary music may refer to music that introduces new and previously unheard concepts, ideas, and styles to the world. Who did it first? Who did it best? What aspect of society influenced a composer to think of that new concept? How was it received? Students will also examine literal "visionary music"—music that composers claim to have been given in a dream or vision.
As well as well famous visionary works, this course will spend significant time on global and indigenous composers and songs, as well as examples from female composers, non-binary composers, and neurodivergent composers. "Listen Up! Exploring Visionary Music through the Ages" will encourage an interdisciplinary understanding of Music. Students will examine music from a Historical, Scientific, Mathematic, Poetic and even Industrial perspective.
