This First-Year Seminar examines sports as a powerful cultural, social, and economic institution in American life. Sports shape identity, community, politics, and opportunity—particularly within higher education and the Appalachian region. Through discussion, reflection, and analysis, students will explore how athletics intersect with race, gender, class, media, law, and power. Special attention is given to Appalachian State University’s athletic traditions, the role of college sports in shaping campus culture, and the broader ethical and civic questions surrounding collegiate athletics. The course is designed to support students’ transition to college while developing skills essential for academic success and engaged citizenship. Sports shape how communities understand success, fairness, identity, and belonging. This seminar invites students to think critically about those forces—at Appalachian State, in Appalachia, and beyond.
