Full Course Title:
Living, Loving, and Literature in Appalachia
I designed this course, Living, Loving, and Literature in Appalachia, to inform students how people, since the time of the Cherokee, have come to the southern mountains. On this journey, we will learn about their stories, relationships, and struggles to a new life often different from the one they left behind.
We will examine the meanings of sense of place, and how the phrase might apply to characters we read about and to our own lives and relationships because, as Appalachian novelist/poet/professor/farmer Wendell Berry suggests, "If you don't know where you are, you don't know who you are."
