Learning Services

ASA Learning Services

The Learning Services staff includes three Learning Specialists and a team of graduate assistants and study hall monitors. Together, we support over 200 student-athletes each year through study hall and one-on-one academic support.

Study Hall

Located on the second floor of  D.D. Dougherty Hall, our study hall space is open 6 days a week for over 50 hours and features desktop computers, printer access, and equipment such as laptops and calculators for check-out. Study Hall is a structured time for students to complete homework, study and access academic resources. Students may also receive additional academic help from graduate assistants and learning specialists during this time. Study Hall is required for all students in their first year at Appalachian; returning students will be assigned to study hall services based on academic need.

One-on-One Academic Support

Student-athletes in need of more intensive academic support meet weekly with a Learning Specialist or Graduate Assistant for one-on-one academic support. These meetings will focus on building the skills required for academic success, such as time management, prioritization, and study strategies.

Tutoring

University Tutorial Services believes in every students' ability to be self-directed learners, leading to success inside and outside the classroom. By teaching specific strategies focused on building self-awareness and academic resourcefulness, students are empowered to make positive and impactful changes in their lives.

The University Tutorial Services (UTS) offers tutoring in three primary forms: appointment-based, drop-in, and LEAD weekly sessions. Visit the UTS website for more information.
