Students will read about the Appalachian region, use the resources of the Special Collection in the library, and have several visiting collaborators who will address the documentary process. Several of the noted photographers who have worked in Appalachia will be studied. Considering the photography of the people indigenous to our region, their culture and lifestyle, and those who have documented these things is an approach that will permit students to develop insight and a stronger relationship with the community in which they live. The concept of the picture as story will be developed. Students will be expected to use both images and writing to demonstrate their understanding of the material covered.
